Windows XP and Office 2003.... Your Out!

Microsoft has announced the end of life for Windows XP and Office 2003. What does this mean for you?

It means you should take action!
After April 8th, 2014, there will be no new security updates, non-security hotfixes, free or paid assisted support options or online technical content updates. Running Windows XP and Office 2003 in your environment after the end of support will expose you and your company to security and compliance risks.

For more information on your current Microsoft Windows Status and paths to upgrade, please contact us.
IT Tech Tip of the Month - Latest in AV protection
How do I keep my computer clean of viruses, malware and spyware?  The truth... The best way to keep your computer clean is to make sure all your applications are current with updates and patches, smart browsing, a little bit of luck and a good anti-virus application. If your PC is on the internet, it is similar to saying "How can I never get a cold again?" No one anti-virus application has all the answers or is 100% garanteed to keep your PC clean.   So where do we go from here?

CIU Networks has done their homework and has teamed up with the best solution providers available. With our proven practices you can rest assure that the best posible solution is in place. Recently we have teamed up with another two vendors: N-Able and Bit Defender.

N-Able and Bit Defender allows up to manage you current environment updates and security and patches, gives us reporting and manages your Anti-Virus, Anti-Maleware and Anit-Spyware.

If you are on a current maintanence plan with us, you are covered. If you would like to request more information in getting your systems up to date or to make sure you have the latest protection from spyware, malware and viruses, please contact us.
Tech Gadget of the Month: SSD (Solid State Drive)
A SSD is much like a USB thumb drive, but on steroids. It is the new standard for Hard Drives in all computers. They are lighter, faster, consume less energy and are simply far superior to traditional hard drives. Sure, they are a bit more expensive and have less capicity then a spindel hard drive, but worth the sacrafice.

Want to make your current PC run like new, but faster then ever? Slap one of these puppies in and get to work efficiently.
Tech Word of the Month: Latency
Latency is the amount of time it takes a packet of data to move across a network connection. When a packet is being sent, there is "latent" time, when the computer that sent the packet waits for confirmation that the packet has been received. Latency and bandwidth are the two factors that determine your network connection speed.

Bottom Line: If you are on a network or internet connection that has many hops, or many different equipment that the connection needs to jump through, your connection can be slow. Even if you have a super fast connection, latency can slow down the initial connection time as well as large quanties of data transactions.
